WHEREAS, walking is beneficial to your overall health, a great way to get out, get moving and build relationships within your community; and
WHEREAS, Arlington County is a crossroads for some of the region’s most popular recreational trails, including W&OD, the Custis Trail, and the Mount Vernon Trail, which see thousands of walkers each year; and
WHEREAS, Arlington County has improved many areas by creating shops and restaurants, making urban villages which encourage Arlingtonians to get out and walk around; and
WHEREAS, Arlington County promotes WalkArlington which hosts many self-guided walkabouts highlighting the history and beauty of Arlington neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, Arlington County promotes the Car-Free Diet to encourage residents to try a car-free lifestyle to save money, improve health and clean the environment; and
WHEREAS, Arlington County is a community with well-conceived pedestrian plans and first-class pedestrian facilities; and
WHEREAS, Arlington County has many great walkable neighborhoods and has been recognized as a Gold-Level Walk Friendly Community, one of only four communities to receive this honor nationwide; NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jay Fisette, Chair of the County Board of Arlington, Virginia, do hereby proclaim June 22, 2014, as WALK TO CHURCH SUNDAY in Arlington County and urge all residents to support and participate in this and other activities that contribute to the health of the community and the environment.
