WHEREAS, the Arlington Historical Society was established in 1956 to help preserve and promote the history of Arlington County, Virginia, and has been doing so admirably for 58 years; and
WHEREAS, the Arlington Historical Society has operated the Arlington Historical Museum in the historic Hume School building at 1805 South Arlington Ridge Road since 1962, keeping it open to the public without charge; and
WHEREAS, the Arlington Historical Society owns and maintains the Ball-Sellers House, the oldest residential structure in Arlington, dating to the mid-1700’s, at 5620 South Third Street, and keeps it open to the public without charge; and
WHEREAS, the Arlington Historical Society publishes the Arlington Historical Magazine, an annual publication that contains learned articles on the history of Arlington County; and
WHEREAS, the Arlington Historical Society engages in outreach programs to Arlington County’s schools, minorities, and neighborhoods promoting the value of local history; and
WHEREAS, the Arlington Historical Society sponsors lectures and other programs promoting local history that benefit the entire citizenry of Arlington County; and
WHEREAS, the Arlington Historical Society will hold its annual banquet on May 30, 2014, where its members and guests will gather to celebrate the organization’s recent accomplishments and to refresh themselves to face new challenges in preserving and promoting Arlington County’s history;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jay Fisette, Chair of the County Board of Arlington, do hereby RECOGNIZE THE MANY CONTRIBUTIONS OF THE ARLINGTON HISTORICAL SOCIETY TO OUR COMMUNITY and encourage all residents to join in celebrating these contributions in connection with the organization’s annual banquet on May 30, 2014.
