WHEREAS, volunteering is central to the American character and is a fundamental expression of responsible citizenship; and
WHEREAS, volunteer service is needed now more than ever to tackle the tough social, economic, cultural and humanitarian needs of our residents; and
WHEREAS, volunteers can connect with local service opportunities through Volunteer Arlington and other HandsOn Network Action Centers; and
WHEREAS, Arlington volunteers serve in many crucial capacities – like mentoring and tutoring children, providing companionship to the elderly, running community theaters and arts programs, helping new residents assimilate into our community, cleaning highways and parks, preparing for emergency situations, staffing essential community organizations and offering physical and spiritual aid to the hungry and homeless; and
WHEREAS, the National Association of Counties has encouraged communities across the country to actively promote county government programs and services during National County Government Month; and
WHEREAS, our values of inclusion and diversity, for healthy living, for sustainability, and fiscal responsibility guide us to be the community where each person is indeed important; and
WHEREAS, when we work together, value and respect each other’s cultures and perspectives, we understand each other better and make great things happen;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mary Hughes Hynes, Chair of the Arlington County Board, do hereby proclaim April 12 through April 18, 2015, as NATIONAL VOLUNTEER WEEK 2015 in Arlington County and encourage all to celebrate the invaluable work that volunteers perform every day, to commit themselves to do even more through the many volunteer programs in our community, and to continue strengthening Arlington through volunteer service.
