WHEREAS, the spread of HIV/AIDS demands a community-wide effort in increased communication and preventive action to stop the transmission of HIV/AIDS; and
WHEREAS, June 27 of each year has been designated as National HIV Testing Day, a day to expand and strengthen the countywide effort to stop the spread of HIV/AIDS, to support persons affected by this illness, and to pay tribute to those who have lost their lives; and
WHEREAS, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimate that currently every nine-and-a-half minutes, someone in the United States is infected with HIV. More than 24,000 Virginians are known to be living with HIV/AIDS as of 2012. Additionally, CDC estimates that 25% of those who are infected with HIV do not know they have HIV; and
WHEREAS, the Arlington Department of Human Services, Public Health Division, is promoting a better understanding of the challenge of HIV/AIDS as the number of people diagnosed with HIV and AIDS in the community continues to increase; and
WHEREAS, the 2014 National HIV Testing Day theme “Take the Test: Take Control” is a reminder that we still have a long way to go to stop the threat of HIV/AIDS and that we must continue to educate the community while providing necessary services for those affected by HIV/AIDS;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jay Fisette, Chair of the County Board of Arlington, Virginia, do hereby proclaim June 27, 2014 as NATIONAL HIV TESTING DAY 2014 in Arlington County and encourage all residents to join with the NovaSalud Inc., Arlington Public Health Division, and elected officials in raising awareness of HIV/AIDS in the community.
