WHEREAS, Ecuador celebrates its National Day on August 10th in remembrance of the 206th anniversary of the Proclamation of Independence; and
WHEREAS, in 1809 a declaration of independence from Spain was proclaimed by a Patriotic and Sovereign Junta which was the first such move of its kind and prompted many other colonies in America to follow suit; and
WHEREAS, after years of struggle, independence was assured in 1822 in a battle led by General Sucre, the first draft of the Constitution was drawn up in 1824, and the name Ecuador was officially given to the country; and
WHEREAS, there is an active Ecuadorian community living in the Washington metropolitan area with people from all walks of life: professionals, employees, artists, homemakers and students; and
WHEREAS, as a community and as a government, we are proud of the cultural enrichment brought by Ecuadorian immigrants who have become an important part of our community;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Mary Hughes Hynes, Chair of the Arlington County Board, do hereby proclaim August 16, 2015, as “ECUADOR NATIONAL DAY” in Arlington County and urge all residents to support the County’s celebration of the heritage of our Ecuadorian residents.
