WHEREAS, a sound natural environment is the foundation of a healthy society and a robust economy;
WHEREAS, human activities around the globe are causing environmental damage that impact human health and our planet’s ability to sustain a diverse community of life;
WHEREAS, the knowledge of ways to live in harmony with our environment and methods and technologies to accomplish this end already exist;
WHEREAS, local communities can do much to reverse environmental degradation and contribute to building a healthy society by addressing issues such as energy use, transportation, waste prevention, and sprawl;
WHEREAS, Earth Day is celebrated nationally on April 22, 2014, and surrounding that day jurisdictions, citizens, and organizations take part in a number of festivals and activities to promote environmental stewardship and conservation;
WHEREAS, citizens, businesses, and Arlington County Government are dedicated to programs and services that benefit the local environment and conserve natural resources; and,
WHEREAS, Arlington County Government, in conjunction with Arlingtonians for a Clean Environment, George Mason University and Arlington Public Schools will participate in the Arlington Community Earth Week Fair featuring the Green Living Expo at Founders Hall on the George Mason University Arlington Campus on Sunday, April 26, 2014;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jay Fisette, Chairman of the County Board of Arlington, Virginia, do hereby proclaim April 26, 2014, as EARTH DAY in Arlington County and urge all County employees, University students, residents, and other organizations to participate in County sponsored events and to organize their own activities in celebration of Earth Day, and encouraging the observance of Earth Day every day of the year.
