Arlington County Board Vice-Chair
(Note: On Thursday, April 16, 2020, Vice-Chair Erik Gutshall died after a brief battle with brain cancer. Mr. Gutshall is mourned by his colleagues on the County Board, County staff and the Arlington community, who join in offering their sympathy and support for his wife, Renee, and their three daughters in this difficult time. Mr. Gutshall, who served our community with passion, wit, and integrity, will be sorely missed.)
Erik Gutshall was elected to the Arlington County Board in November 2017. The founder and president of his own business, Clarendon Home Services, Mr. Gutshall has served his community in a variety of roles since he and his wife Renee moved to Lyon Park in 1995.
As both a member of County commissions and an active community volunteer, Mr. Gutshall has worked hard to implement Arlington’s vision of a sustainable, inclusive community. He sees housing affordability as a fundamental challenge that must be met through bold action.
As chair of the Planning Commission, and during his service on the Transportation Commission, Mr. Gutshall has supported strong public engagement and thoughtful planning to ensure that private development contributes to residents’ quality of life and that any potential negative impacts of development are mitigated.
Mr. Gutshall currently serves as Vice-Chair of the Metropolitan Washington Council of Government’s (MWCOG) Metropolitan Washington Air Quality Committee (MWAQC). He also serves as a Director of the Virginia Association of Countiee (VaCO) and chairs their Economic Development and Planning Steering Committee.
Mr. Gutshall earned his BS in Political Science from James Madison University and his MA in Environmental Resource Policy from The George Washington University. He is a member of Leadership Arlington Class of 2009.
He previously served on the Board of Doorways for Women and Families and on the Facilities Committee of Western Presbyterian Church, coached youth soccer, and served as a PTA volunteer. His three daughters all attend Arlington Public Schools.
