WHEREAS, the Office of Senior Adult Programs was inaugurated on October 4, 1954; and
WHEREAS, Arlington’s Department of Parks and Recreation’s 55+ Program and Senior Adult Council is holding a celebration on October 24th in honor of the 60th Anniversary of the Office of Senior Adult Programs; and
WHEREAS, Arlington’s 55+ program boasts 308 registered volunteers, a total program and activity attendance of 142,163 people and a reported 97% of participants who agree that our programs meet their fitness goals and needs all or most of the time; and
WHEREAS, Arlington’s goal is to foster a sense of purpose and empowerment for the over 5,500 Arlington senior adults registered with the 55+ Program through opportunities that provide new roles and opportunities for leadership, service and creative expression; and
WHEREAS, Arlington’s 55+ Program helps our diverse population connect and promotes social interaction and sense of belonging in the community; and
WHEREAS, Arlington’s goal is for senior adults to be independent and freely access services and opportunities that maximize autonomy, sense of control and personal choice; and
WHEREAS, the Office of Senior Adult Programs has enriched the lives of Arlington senior residents, helping them to lead independent, active and satisfying lives;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jay Fisette, Chair of the Arlington County Board, do hereby proclaim October 24, 2014 as the celebration of ARLINGTON’S 55+ PROGRAM 60th ANNIVERSARY in Arlington and urge all residents to recognize the Department of Parks and Recreation’s Office of Senior Adult Programs and its contributions to fostering an active, engaged 55+ community.
