WHEREAS, the County Board created the Neighborhood Conservation Program in 1964 to encourage neighborhoods to develop neighborhood improvement plans and provide dedicated funding to implement those plans; and
WHEREAS, the Neighborhood Conservation Program is the mechanism for improvement and maintenance of areas where residents indicate a desire for a neighborhood complete streets approach and fulfill a broader vision of the modern “urban village” through coordination of public and private efforts; and
WHEREAS, since 1996, Neighborhood Conservation Program has invested over $67M in residential neighborhoods, built over 550 projects, installed more than 200 neighborhood signs, and completed multiple miles of sidewalk significantly increasing pedestrian safety and connectivity; and
WHEREAS, Arlington County is an innovative leader in civic engagement where residents value the Neighborhood Conservation Program because it empowers them to guide planning efforts and improvement projects in their own neighborhoods; and
WHEREAS, the Neighborhood Conservation Program works to build communities and create a forum for residents to collaborate on neighborhood planning efforts;
NOW, THEREFORE, I, Jay Fisette, Chair of the County Board of Arlington, Virginia, do hereby proclaim September 18, 2014, as the 50TH ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATION OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD CONSERVATION PROGRAM and September 2014 as NEIGHBORHOOD CONSERVATION PROGRAM MONTH in Arlington and encourage residents to take advantage of the Neighborhood Conservation Program to improve the quality of life in residential neighborhoods.
